Texas S Ta R Chart Presentation

Summary Data

My opinion of the Infrastructure for Technology

The Texas Long Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020 consists of four areas: Teaching and Learning; Educator Preparation and Development; Leadership, Administration and Instructional Support; and Infrastructure for Technology. Taking a look at the area of Infrastructure for Technology we see that Texas has worked hard to make many significant changes during the last ten years. One of those changes connected all 20 Education Service Centers along with the Texas Education Agency through a system featuring telecommunications with live video and sound.

Infrastructure is the physical hardware used to interconnect computers and users. This includes satellites, routers, transmission media, software, and all other devices that support the processing and flow of information. Infrastructure progresses on the local, state and national levels are equally as impressive as the efforts of education. An example of progress on the local level would be found in the area of our local doctor’s office that now sends prescriptions electronically to our local pharmacy. The state level can see progress in the Department of Safety Troopers increased performance with the use of laptops in the patrol cars. Finally, on the national level is use of www in areas of terrorist activity prevention and investigation. Trends on all three levels push toward a 21st Century efficiency and productivity using advanced digital tools such as fingerprint scanning for authorized access to high powered cameras used in malls, airports, intersections and toll road passes.

My recommendations for improvement in this area would start with increasing the number of computers in the classroom environment using wireless connections available with adequate bandwidth. Training for the teachers and more use of digital tools that the students are comfortable using such as iPods, kindles, flash drives, podcasts, video streaming and digital cameras. Lastly by increasing the number of technical staff and providing training to each in the areas listed above so that the teachers would have assistance during classroom time if needed.
